1. Blu-ray Disc Issues

Q: Why named Blu-ray, not Blue-ray?
A: The name Blu-ray is derived from the underlying technology, which utilizes a blue-violet laser to read and write data. The name is a combination of "Blue" (blue-violet laser) and "Ray" (optical ray). According to the Blu-ray Disc Association the spelling of "Blu-ray" is not a mistake, the character "e" was intentionally left out so the term could be registered as a trademark.

Q: Why Blu-ray Movie look so great?
A: The main reason is Resolution. Blu-ray supports up to FullHD (HighDefinition) 1080p (1920 x1080), while DVD only supports SD 480p (720x480). The audio quality of Blu-ray is also upgraded to TureHD, lossless audiophile grade multi channel Audio instead of lossy AC3 in DVD .

Q: Can I use Blu-ray to record SD Video?
A: Yes, Blu-ray is backward compatible to the SD video, which mean you can use a single layered Blu-ray to store over 11 Hours of DVD quality Video.

2. Techincal Issues

Q: What is the difference between a DVD-5, DVD-9 and DVD-10?
A: The numbers roughly show the capacities of the DVDs.
DVD-5 holds approximately 90 mins of high-quality video & audio (4.7 GB).
DVD-9 is a "dual-layer" disc, and can hold about 3 hours of material (8.5 GB).
DVD-10 is a double-sided disc, and can hold up to 4 hours. (9.4 GB). But, it becomes less popular since it requires the viewer to turn the disc over to play the data and hence it can't have artwork printed on the disc.

Q: What are NTSC and PAL?
A: PAL and NTSC are television broadcast standards - PAL in Europe, for example, and NTSC in the USA and Japan. They are incompatible, so a DVD must be either in the NTSC or PAL format.

Q: What is the difference between disc replication and disc duplication?
A: Disc Replication allows reproduction of high volumes of discs from a CD / DVD master. Since Disc Replication involves some setup costs including the manufacturing of a glass master from a master disc, so it should be used for volume more than 500. However, the readability of CD and DVD produced by replication are better than those by duplication.
For Disc duplication, it actually uses recorders to "burn" data onto a pre-recorded blank CD-R or DVD-R. Your master disc can be changed any times without any setup cost but their quality will be worse than those CD and DVD produced by replication.

Q: What is Video Authoring?
A: Video Authoring is the process of creating a video DVD master for replication. This involves collating all the assets - video, audio, menus, still images, subtitles etc - and linking them together so that people can access them effectively when watching the DVD. Final video will be saved in a DVD-R for customer's approval. Once the DVD-R master has been approved, it can be used for mastering and replication then.

A: Silkscreen Printing is used for:
- Spot colour designs using PMS colour
- Half-tone designs using PMS colour
- Picture print designs using Process Colour (CMYK)

Offset Printing is used for
- Picture print designs using Process Colour (CMYK)

Q: What resolution and file format is best for uploaded artwork?
A: We need your pictures and artwork at 300 dpi (dots per inch). All artwork should be in CMYK, not RGB or something else. The formats of your files can be PDF, TIFF, JPEG, Photoshop and AI. Please be certain to include all fonts in your files. Do not convert fonts to curves. This can severely limit the quality of the type.
